Vitamins for Toddlers

May be one of the most important decisions that you ever make for your child

Are vitamins for toddlers really necessary and do they actually do any good? There are experts in this field that will disagree that vitamins as well as minerals are necessary for toddlers, but there are none of them that will disagree that good nutrition in this critical stage is an absolute must.

There are several reasons why vitamin’s as well as minerals are necessary, and perhaps the most universal reason is that most toddlers are picky eaters to some extent. For this reason alone, you should consider a high quality multivitamin for your toddler.

Developmental years:

Vitamins for toddlers make a lot of sense if your child is a picky eater, as most children between the ages of one and three are either very picky eaters, or in the best of circumstances, picky eaters only on occasion. However, this is not the only reason for you to give your child a supplement.

Other reasons include any other type of eating disorder, a failure to grow and thrive properly, as well as not being able to eat a balanced diet.

Although most all parents will do everything they can to provide their child with a balanced diet, there are some instances where this may not be possible on a day in and day out schedule.

If your child does not drink milk or does not get a lot of sunshine, they may be lacking enough vitamin D in their daily diet, and if you are a vegan and choose this diet for your child as well, they will also need to be supplemented. Some types of a chronic disease, an illness, as well as any type of a food intolerance or food allergy are also reasons to use supplements.

However, there is the other side of the argument that will suggest that several of the foods that your toddler eats are fortified with vitamins and minerals, and for this reason, supplementing with a multivitamin is not necessary.

Each child will be different in their dietary needs, but all will have one thing in common; they need these nutrients in the proper amounts as even very short interruptions of them could cause problems in this very formative stage.

Vitamins for toddlers do not come without some risks and for this reason before you make this decision, you should always discuss it with your physician and let them help to guide you on the right supplement for their age as well as weight. In this decision process, you will also have to make absolutely certain that this supplement meets certain requirements.

First and foremost the multivitamin should be a major brand and preferably natural and it should also be designed exactly for the toddler’s age group.

It should also be a liquid multi-vitamin if possible; as it will not only be easier for your child to swallow, it will also taste a lot better to them. However, liquid vitamins also have two other huge advantages; they absorb in their system at over a 90 percent ratio as compared to about 25 percent in a tablet form, and this form cannot be mistaken for candy.

One of the largest dangers with vitamins for toddlers is that they can mistake them for candy and if this occurs, the outcome could be catastrophic as large dosages of vitamins and minerals can be toxic.

You should also make certain that the source that you have chosen provides for 100 percent of their daily requirements, and they should never be used to replace a proper and balanced diet. These nutrients are called supplements for a reason, as nothing can replace a proper diet in these very formative years.

However, there is one other factor to consider in this decision and that is a very good liquid multi vitamin combined with the proper diet can protect your child from several disease including various types of vitamin deficient problems.

Vitamins for Toddlers:

Vitamins for toddlers have a virtual litany of benefits and all of them are important, but there are also some very critical minerals as well. Perhaps the most important of these nutrients are vitamins A, C, and E.

Vitamin A is considered to be one of the most common vitamin deficiencies that occur in toddlers and it is critical for your child’s skin, their eyesight, as well as their cell development. However, perhaps its most critical role is with their immune system. If this vitamin does become deficient, it opens the door for several infections that can run the gamut from measles to AIDS.

It can also severely affect their developing eyesight, as well as causes dry eyes, poor taste and smell, and may even affect their balance.

A development of poor taste and smell is that last thing you need if you have a picky eater. Vitamin C is considered to be critical for your toddler’s immune system, their ability to heal properly, as well as helping with both healthy bones and tissue growth. It also helps your child to absorb iron from non-meat sources as most children will not eat a lot of fruits and vegetables.

This vitamin is also considered to be the strongest anti-oxidant agents in fighting free radical damages which can lead to infections and disease.

Vitamins and toddlers continue with vitamin D and this nutrient can naturally be synthesized in your child’s skin by sunlight exposure, but there are several parts of the world where the sun is clouded over several months of the year. This nutrient is extremely important for healthy bones, teeth, and is also required for the kidneys to function properly.

However, perhaps its most important function is what it does for other nutrients. It helps several nutrients absorb in your child’s body including calcium, magnesium, as well as iron, zinc, and phosphorous. It also helps with the processing of vitamin A.

The B complex of vitamins are also very important, especially vitamin B6. This nutrient assists with the absorption of vitamin 12 and it also helps to absorb the mineral zinc. It is also essential for the production of red bloods cells and the antibodies in your toddler, both of which are critical in these formative stages.

However, it largest role is with your child’s metabolism of carbohydrates, fats, as well as proteins.

Vitamins for toddlers also include other nutrients such as calcium, zinc, magnesium, and iron. Calcium is needed in your developing child to activate their muscles, develop strong teeth and bones, as well as helping build cell structures properly. It is also extremely important for the development of the brain and nervous system, blood clotting, as well as helping to absorb vitamin B12.

Zinc is required for several things including growth and energy as well as proper metabolism and insulin storage.

Magnesium also helps with energy production, the binding of calcium, as well as contraction and relaxation of your child’s heart muscles. A deficiency of this mineral can very easily lead to hyperactivity.

Iron is critical in the production of the hemoglobin in red blood cells, immune activity, as well as supplying oxygen to your child’s cells.

If there is a deficiency of this mineral, it can very easily lead to anemia.

Summary:

Vitamins for toddlers, as unbelievable as it sounds, are still a controversy among some experts. However, working with your doctor and picking a high quality liquid form of multivitamins that can never be mistaken for candy, has several potential benefits with very little risks.
