Vitamin D and Liquid Vitamins

Vitamin D is a fat-soluble vitamin that is essential for normal calcium metabolism.

Vitamin D3 (cholecalciferol) can be synthesized by humans in the skin upon exposure to ultra-violet-B (UVB) radiation from sunlight, or it can be obtained from the diet.

Plants synthesize ergosterol, which is converted to this nutrient by ultraviolet light.

Liquid vitamins provide for an exact daily requirement of this nutrient with each taking, and their superior absorption ratio and the ease of digesting and swallowing make them much easier for all age groups to take.

An adequate intake of Vitamin D from the diet is essential for health. By itself it is biologically inactive, and it must metabolize to its biologically active forms.

After this nutrient is consumed in the diet or synthesized in the epidermis of the skin, it enters the circulation and is transported to the liver.

In the liver, it is hydroxylated to form 25-hydroxyvitamin D, the major circulating form of this nutrient.

Increased exposure to sunlight or increased dietary intake of this nutrient increases serum levels, making these levels into nutritional status.

Maintenance of serum calcium levels within a narrow range is vital for normal functioning of the nervous system, as well as for bone growth and maintenance of bone density.

It is essential for the efficient utilization of calcium in the body. In symptoms of deficiency with this nutrient, calcium absorption cannot be increased enough to satisfy the body's calcium needs.

Although it has long been known that a severe deficiency has serious consequences for bone health, recent research states that this nutrients deficiency is quite common and increases the risk of "osteoporosis" and other health problems.

Severe deficiency, especially in infants and children, results in the failure of bone to mineralize.

Rapidly growing bones are most severely affected by "rickets". The growth plates of bones continue to enlarge, but in the absence of adequate mineralization, weight-bearing limbs (arms and legs) become bowed.

In infants, rickets may result in delayed closure of the fontanels (soft spots) in the skull, and the rib cage may become deformed by the pulling action of the diaphragm.

Although adult bones are no longer growing, they are in a constant state of turnover, or basically remodeling.

In adults with a severe deficiency of vitamin D, the collagenous bone matrix is preserved but bone mineral is progressively lost, resulting in bone pain and "osteomalacia", known as "soft bones".

It also cause "muscle weakness" and pain in children and adults.

People with dark skin synthesis less of this nutrient on exposure to sunlight than those with light-colored skin, and the elderly also have reduced capacity to synthesize this nutrient in skin exposure when exposed to UVB radiation.

Vitamin D is found naturally in very few foods. Foods containing this nutrient include the following:

Pink salmon, sardines and mackerel, (canned), cow's milk (fortified), soymilk (fortified), orange juice (fortified), and egg yolk. Quaker Nutrition for women instant oatmeal is also a good source of this nutrient.

Most supplements available without a prescription contain contain cholecalciferol (vitamin D3), which is more potent than ergocalciferol, (vitamin D2).

Multi-vitamin supplements for children generally provide 200 IU (5mcg) and multi-vitamin supplements for adults generally provide 400IU (10mcg) of this nutrient.

LIQUID VITAMINS

A number of calcium supplements also provide for excellent sources of this nutrient.

There are several very good brands of liquid vitamins in today's market that can provide multi-vitamin supplementation and help with the functions of vitamin D.
